Seasonal Flowers

Some flowers have a short season, and this is part of their charm. Scented narcissi herald the arrival of spring; lily of the valley represents the month of May. Some flowers - thanks to breeding and growing techniques, coupled with imports from overseas - are available all year round. The following shows the availability of various ones throughout the year; as you can see, whichever season you choose, there is an abundance of beautiful ones to choose from. And for best value, it is always worth buying ones which are in season.

Bulb flowers such as Narcissus hybrids, daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, Muscari (grape hyacinth) are in season. Many of these have a delightful scent. Indeed, a great number of spring-flowering plants are scented, including Chamaelaucium (wax flower), lily of the valley (Convallaria), Genista (florists' broom), and lilac.

Summer is a time of abundance for flowers, with all colours and shapes available. For something traditionally meadow-like, there are Alchemilla (lady's mantle), campanula, marguerite (Chrysanthemum frutescens) and other annual chrysanthemums, and solidago or goldenrod. Similarly cottage-garden in appearance are Aconitum (monkshood), alliums, peony, phlox, scented stock (Matthiola), sweet william (Dianthus barbatus), sweet pea, godetia or clarkia and sunflowers.


Autumn brings the rich colours of Achillea (yarrow), love-lies-bleeding, cockscomb and plume celosia, crocosmia, dahlia, gladiolus, late sunflowers, red hot poker (Kniphofia), hypericum, zinnia and solidago. Cooler shades can be found in echinops (globe thistle), Gomphrena, Chinese aster (Callistephus), Physostegia (obedience plant), scabious, and sedum. Foliages also get interesting, with rich colours, berries, seedpods and twigs coming into the shops.

Winter is not a barren, bleak time for flowers - as well as flowers available all year round (see below) there are early bulb flowers like amaryllis, hyacinth, tulip, narcissus, and hellebore; southern hemisphere exotics such as protea, kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos)and Euphorbia fulgens; and foliages including ilex (hollyberry) and leucadendron to add much-needed colour.

All Year Round

Many flowers and foliages are now available all year round. This may mean that at certain times of year they cost a little more, as they have been grown with added heat and light, or flown in from far countries. However it also means we get a huge choice of fresh products right through the year. Here are some of the choices available.

Tropicals: Alpinia (ginger lily), ornamental pineapple, anthurium (painters' palette), bouvardia, Cymbidium, Oncidium, Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium orchids, Gloriosa (flame lily) Heliconia (lobster claw), Banksia, Strelitzia (bird of paradise)

Favourites Old and New : alstroemeria, anemone, chrysanthemum, delphinium, freesia, carnation, gerbera, gypsophila, iris, lily, rose, September flower (Aster ericoides), statice (Limonium)

Something More Unusual: snapdragon (Antirrhinum), leucadendron (safari sunset), liatris, lisianthus, lysimachia, nerine, moluccella (bells of Ireland), Ornithogalum (chincherinchee, star of Bethlehem), Zantedeschia (arum lily, calla)
